Capsicum baccatum L. Chillies

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

The plants are 45-75 cm tall. The stem and leaves are essentially glabrous, rarely cIensely short pubescent. The leaves are ovate to ovate- lanceolate, to 10.5 cm broad, smooth or rugose, and light to dark green. The flowers are borne 3-5 per node, except in depauperate individuals.

Capsicum frutescens L. species is sometimes called the bird pepper. It is now found as a weed or wild plant from Florida, Mexico and the West Indies to northern parts of South America. Smith and Heiser (1957) state that because of its wide distribution no conclusion can be drawn as to its centre of origin in the American tropics.

Capsicum pubescens Ruiz & Pavon is a very distinct species and can be distinguished from the other cultivated species by the overall pubescence of the plant, by its blue or purple flowers instead of white or greenish, and its very thick-fleshed fruits which contain black wrinkled seeds in contrast to the pale yellow, more-or-less smooth seeds of the other species. The fruits are very variable in shape, size and pungency. The ripe fruit colour may he red, orange or brown.

What Kind Of Vegetable To Plant

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Once a garden plan has been prepared, the next consideration in good vegetable gardening is to select the best possible varieties of vegetables to be grown and to order the seeds. Since no one seed company has a monopoly on all the best varieties, it is a good idea to pick up several catalogs.

Last year we bought seeds from five suppliers and this year we will be ordering from six or seven to get all the varieties we want. Avoid varieties which are described as being good for shipping, for “keeping” (except a few like onions and winter squash) or for storage. Those are qualities important to commercial growers but definitely not to home gardeners. You want the varieties to be succulent and flavorful and resistant to plant diseases.

Have You Used Landscaping And Mulch For Your Yard?

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Guaranteeing success with mulch and landscaping isn’t something that is very difficult to do if you approach it in an intelligent way and plan ahead. Still, some larger projects for yards surrounding bigger homes or businesses can require some experience in landscaping and the proper use of topsoil and gardening tools.

If you have the budget to allow it, you may want to consider hiring a professional landscaping company that can put the expert touch on your yard project. A professional landscaper will be able to use mulch, topsoil and other gardening materials in ways that will amaze you when you see the finished product.

If you live in a residential neighborhood or own your own building, then you know how common the need for landscaping is in today’s world. This means that there will always be plenty of options to choose from when it comes to buying and using topsoil, mulch and stone for your project.

If you’re looking for a good way to get physical and keep mentally stimulated in the spring and summer months, then landscaping your yard is a great way to do it. By working on mulch and gardening projects, you may be surprised at how much exercise and personal satisfaction you can really get.

Pimento Pollination

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

The simplest and traditional method of establishing a pimento walk or semi-wild plantation in Jamaica was to use self-sown seedlings or seeds which had been distributed by birds, which sprang up along fences and in thickets, where they obtained protection from livestock, from the sun and drying winds. The seedlings were then preserved at a spacing of about 6 m when the land was cleared and put down to pasture.

Hope, Jamaica in apparent isolation, bore fruits; seedlings from it, presumably S have been planted. A seedling characterized by narrow leaf blades, known as pepper- leaf type, has been planted for observation; seedling trees produced small berries with a low oil content. A dwarf strain is also reported. A lemon-scented pimento was discovered growing at Williamsfield, Manchester, Jamaica and has been propagated for establishment of an observation plot.

Adams (1972) gives this as a distinct species P. jamaicensis (Britton & Harris) Proctor. Clonal trials were undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture, Jamaica, in collaboration with the Tropical Products Institute (1968 -72) when some 200 clones were examined for tree berry yield and berry-oil content. The volatile-oil content was found to range from 2 to 7 per cent.

What is Pimento?

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

The dried unripe fruits of Pimenta dioica,,a,smallish, evergreen tree, provides the culinary spice pimento of commerce. It belongs to the Myrtaceae, the same family as the clove. Pimento is also called allspice, as the flavour is said to resemble a mixture of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. It is sometimes known as Jamaica pepper.

According to Willis (1966) the genus Pimenta, contains 18 species in tropical America and the West Indies. P. racemosa (Mill.) J.W. Moore is native of northern South America and the West Indies, whose leaves on distillation yield bay oil, which is used in perfumery.

Sir Hans Sloane (1725) in his Natural History of Jamaica records the tree in its natural habitat, the flowering season, the method of preparation of the spice and the price. According to Culpepper (1813) it was first introduced and cultivated in the stove house in England by Mr Philip Miller in 1739, whereas Stephenson and Churchill (1835) state that it was cultivated by Philip Miller in 1732, but the date of its introduction is uncertain.

Cloves Bud Oil

Monday, November 24th, 2008

The fixed-oil content of the spice is between 5 and 10 per cent and it is comprised of the fatty oil and resins. Salzer (1975b) has reported that saturated acids account for about 94 per cent of the total constituent acids of the fatty oil with stearic acid predominating (89 per cent of the total).

While the chemistry of the essential oils has received sporadic attention since the mid-nineteenth century, there has been a dearth of published material in recent years. Several aspects have yet to be fully explained and these include: a thorough investigation of the relationship of chemical composition to organoleptic properties; changes in composition during maturation of the bud and leaf, and during storage of the spice; and the qualitative and quantitative differences in composition of the spice from the various geographical sources.

The general composition and properties of the spice and the oleoresin. The dried clove bud contains a steam-volatile oil, fixed (fatty oil), resins, tannins, proteins, cellulose, pentosans and mineral elements. Carbohydrates comprise about two-thirds of the weight of the spice. The relative abundance of the individual constituents, particularly that of the volatile oil, can vary somewhat between sample lots of the spice according to its geographical origin, the grade, and the conditions and duration of storage.

Pimention Germination

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Two forms of vegetative propagation have been developed in Jamaica. Chapman (1965) gives these as budding with about 30 per cent success, and approach-grafting with about 95 per cent success, although the latter is the more cumbersome method. In the budding, an axillary bud together with its leaf and a small shield of bark are taken from the selected tree and any wood attached to the inside is removed. This shield is inserted into an accurately cut space in the bark of a seedling and secured with plastic grafting tape and the whole covered with plastic sheet. If successful, the bud will begin to grow out in about six weeks.

No distinction is being made currently in selecting clones for the production of pimento leaf oil as opposed to berries. The spacing recommended for the establishment of new groves is 18 ft (5.5 m) square. The planting of clonal approach-grafted trees has very obvious advantages and one male tree should be planted for every ten females. Hedge planting can of course be much closer at 2 m square, but a dwarf variety planted at Braco did not come up to expectations as far as yield and oil content are concerned.

Important Tips on Chili Pests

Cutworms, Feltia subterranea (F.) and .Peridroma saucia (Htibn.) are often severe on newly set plants, cutting them off near the surface of the soil. The smooth, stout, soft-bodied larvae are usually dull- coloured and up to 4 cm long. They can be controlled by poisoned bait. Aphids, particularly the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), and the potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), are the most common and widely distributed of the pests of capsicums. Infection can occur in the nursery or hotbed. They are the vectors of virus diseases. It is important to control aphids by dusting or spraying as soon as the first infestation is evident and as often as necessary thereafter.

Roussenova-Kondareva (1968) states that C. baccatum var. pendulum (syn. C. pendulum) crosses with C. annuum in cases where the former is the female parent, in which the F, hybrids are similar and usually occupy an intermediary position, but resembling more the female parent in certain characters. F, hybrids differed in a number of morphological and physiological features and could be divided into four groups; plants of female parent type; plants of male parent type; plants of an intermediary type; and plants representing a new form which were fully sterile. Male sterile forms were also obtained which are useful for breeding.

Lawn Care And The Right Tools For The Job

Friday, November 21st, 2008

It has not been that long ago, that the first blades of grass were cut down about only 150 years ago. During those days people used as grass cutting scythe and did it all by hand, and many were lucky it even worked moderately. Nowadays, there are over a dozen different tools that have been designed that people use to keep their lawns in pristine shape.

The lawn mower is just the most basic of all lawn care tools and it is hard to imagine a living organism that actually needs to be cut and sliced off to be kept healthy. As a professional lawn care worker once said, Grass just likes to be cut, and to accomplish this a good, quality lawnmower is essential.

Though a lawn mower is an expensive investment, if it is taken care of it can last a lifetime. You will need to keep the blade sharpened, the spark plugs clean and the air filter changed if the mower has one, and change the oil as needed.
