If you have been looking for a gel flame fireplace for your home, you may be wondering if it is the right choice for you. Many people have bought one of these fireplaces for their homes over the last twenty plus years, so it makes sense to learn from the experience of others. 1. Gel Flame Fireplaces do not give off much heat.
The plain and simple of it is the fact that the do not put off much heat. I have done mountains of research on them, and many websites claim that they are capable of putting off enough heat to warm a room during the winter. This could not be farther from the truth. If you lived in the desert southwest you might be able to take the chill out of a room on a cool winter morning. I guess I can admit to that. The best use for these appliances is for background lighting and to generally sit there and look good. They are best used in those applications.
2. Buying replacement fuel cans can be expensive.
Gel flame fireplaces get their source of fuel from cans of gelled alcohol. These cans of fuel are burned producing the flame that makes them a true fireplace. When the gel fuel is completely consumed from the can, they need to be replaced. Most manufacturers do not recommend that these empty can be refilled, mostly for safety reasons.
Many of these unique fireplaces are designed to burn three cans of fuel at a time. These cans will usually get you two or maybe three hours of burn time. Having said that, it does not take long to go through several cans of this fuel. Even though they are designed for two or three cans, burning only one at a time can make for an enjoyable experience.
Buying in bulk is the optimal approach if you must burn all three cans at one time. Don’t be cheap. If you are entertaining, go ahead and burn three.
3. They are expensive to purchase.
Yep, some gel flame fireplaces are very expensive. At least for me anyway. The different models can sell for well over $600. But very attractive and high quality models can be purchased for a great deal less. The smallest models can be very affordable. These personal models, as they are called, burn much smaller cans of fuel that are a lot less expensive than the larger cans for the full sized model.
Would I recommend a gel flame fireplace to my friends or family? My answer is absolutely yes. My fireplace is the focal point of parties and family gatherings at my house. Every time I have someone over to my house that has never seen one; they are amazed and are filled with questions about it. I love both of mine and I am sure you will too.
